Pickup
On tour day, you will be picked up from your confirmed pick-up point sometime between 6:45 am and 7:20 am.
The Van Experience
When you step onto our coach, you'll find yourself in a premium Mercedes Sprinter that's been specially customised for the drive to Milford Sound.
We've removed a row of seats, which gives 60% more legroom than a standard tour van of the same model. The leather bucket seats themselves are 20% wider than standard seats and can recline.
The van is limited to a maximum of 13 guests. Other features include USB charging ports, climate control air conditioning, tinted windows, and overhead bag storage.
Queenstown to Te Anau
Once you're on the road, your guide will introduce themselves to the group, share a bit of background on who they are, and give you a run-down of the plan for the day. Throughout the journey, you'll also hear stories about the area, its history, and the wildlife.
You'll drive through Southland farmland as the sun rises. There's a bathroom break partway through the drive between Queenstown and Te Anau, with the total drive to Te Anau around 2 hours.
Leg stretch at Te Anau
Te Anau is the closest town to Milford Sound. We stop here for around 30 minutes, giving you time to stretch your legs, grab a coffee, use the bathrooms, or pick up any snacks for the rest of the day.
If you haven't pre-ordered lunch when booking and haven't brought your own, this is also your opportunity to buy something to take with you.
Your guide will point out a few good local cafés, shops, and the bathrooms before we continue towards Milford Sound.
Into Fiordland National Park
After Te Anau, you’ll head off down the Milford Road into Fiordland National Park, where the landscape becomes more dramatic, with dense native rainforest, mountains, and rivers.
Your guide will choose the best stops on the day based on the conditions. The focus is on giving you time in nature and avoiding the crowds where possible.
Stops You Might Experience
Eglinton Valley: A wide glacially-carved valley with golden tussock and views of the surrounding mountains. A popular and peaceful photo stop.
Mirror Lakes: A short boardwalk leads to a series of still ponds that create mirror images of the Earl Mountains on calm days.
Monkey Creek: Glacier-fed creek with crystal-clear drinkable water, surrounded by steep mountains.
Cleddau Valley: A dramatic stop just after the Homer Tunnel, with steep forested cliffs and the road winding down toward Milford Sound.

The Milford Sound Cruise
When you arrive at Milford Sound, your guide will take you directly to the cruise terminal.
Your guide will get your tickets sorted and introduce you to the cruise boat.
Cruises depart at 1:00 pm in summer and 1:30 pm in winter, and run for around 2 hours.
The Boat
For your cruise, you'll be looked after by our partners at RealNZ aboard the Milford Haven.
This is a medium-sized cruise vessel with capacity for up to 400 passengers, but RealNZ caps numbers at 150 to ensure the boat doesn't feel crowded.
The boat has multiple viewing decks, indoor lounges, and reserved seating for Luxe Tours guests. You'll get great views of waterfalls, mountains rising straight out of the water, and the wildlife that calls Milford Sound home.
Lunch on the Cruise
If you added a lunch option at the time of booking, your lunch will be brought to your reserved seating at the start of the cruise as you're heading out into the fiord.
If you didn't pre-order lunch, the boat also has cabinet food available to purchase, along with hot drinks. There's also a bar onboard.
Heading Back to Queenstown
When the cruise ends, your guide will meet you at the dock. From here, the return journey depends on which option you booked.
Van Return
Most guests return to Queenstown in our van. The drive back includes one or two more scenic stops, depending on the day and conditions. Your guide will make sure you've experienced the best of the Milford Road by the end of the day.
The van arrives back in Queenstown between 7:30 pm and 7:45 pm.
Plane or Helicopter Flyback
If you booked a flyback option, your guide will introduce you to your pilot at Milford Airport after the cruise. From there, you'll fly back to Queenstown across the Southern Alps, with the helicopter option also including an alpine landing along the way.
When you land in Queenstown, a complimentary shuttle takes you back to your accommodation. You'll get back around 4-5 hours earlier than the coach return.
A Note on Flight Cancellations
Around 40% of Milford Sound flights are cancelled due to weather. If your flight is cancelled, you'll return to Queenstown on the coach instead, and you'll be fully refunded for the flight portion of your tour.
