If you're visiting Queenstown and want to experience Milford Sound on a tour, you have several options. Luxe Tours offers a day tour from Queenstown that covers the journey in a single day, and that works well for many visitors.

But if you have more time in your schedule and want a deeper, more immersive experience, Luxe’s three-day backcountry tour via Walter Peak is designed for exactly that. This tour connects Queenstown to Milford Sound through exclusive backcountry routes, working high-country stations, and the Von Valley, venturing through landscapes that most visitors never see.

This tour is also the only guided tour operating through the Von Valley between Queenstown and Te Anau, and includes two nights in Te Anau, a quieter morning cruise at Milford Sound, a restaurant lunch at Milford Sound Lodge, and two journeys aboard the historic TSS Earnslaw.

This guide covers the full itinerary, what's included, and what to expect on this exclusive, three-day, backcountry adventure.

Day One: Queenstown to Te Anau via Walter Peak

The TSS Earnslaw

Your tour begins at 11:30 AM from the RealNZ Visitors Centre in Queenstown. The late-morning start gives you time to check out of Queenstown accommodation without rushing.

You'll board the TSS Earnslaw with your luggage for a 45-minute cruise across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak. The Earnslaw is the oldest operating passenger steamship in the Southern Hemisphere, carrying passengers since 1912. Onboard, you can view the engine room and learn about the vessel's history.

Walter Peak High Country Station

When you arrive at Walter Peak, you'll be greeted by working farm dogs before heading to your Luxe Tours reserved lake-view table for a gourmet barbecue buffet lunch.

The lunch spread includes meats, seafood, vegetables, salads, and desserts. Special dietary requirements are well accommodated, with over 30 different dietary needs catered for, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

After lunch, you'll enjoy a farm show with shearing and working dog demonstrations, providing insight into New Zealand's agricultural heritage and the daily workings of a high-country station.

The Backcountry Drive

At approximately 1:30 PM, your Luxe Tours guide arrives with the custom Mercedes Sprinter van. This all-wheel drive coach has been modified from 17 seats down to 10 for extra space and comfort on the backcountry gravel roads.

The afternoon drive traverses Walter Peak Station, Mount Nicholas Station, and the Von Valley. These areas are inaccessible to rental cars, as rental car companies don’t allow travelling on gravel roads. Luxe Tours is also the only guided tour operating in this area, so the drive feels completely removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Your guide provides commentary on the area's history, ecology, and high-country farming practices during multiple scenic stops on the journey to Te Anau.

Von Valley

The Von Valley stretches approximately 50 kilometres from Lake Wakatipu toward Te Anau, showcasing a rugged, rocky landscape with steep mountain slopes.

The tour follows the Von River, eventually crossing part of it via a ford. The route also passes a historic homestead dating back approximately 200 years, where your guide shares stories of the early settlers who made their lives in this remote area.

Mountain Views and Mt Nicholas Station

The van climbs to an elevation of around 600 metres above sea level, where you'll enjoy panoramic views across the Von Valley. The tour passes through Mt Nicholas Station, where encounters with farm animals such as sheep, cows, and nose-ringed bulls are common. You may also have the opportunity to open the farm gates for the van to pass through.

The Rain Shadow Effect

One of the dive’s highlights is witnessing the rain shadow effect, where mountain ranges block rain-bearing weather systems, creating dramatically different environments on either side of the range. To the left, you'll see the dry, rugged landscape characteristic of Central Otago. To the right, you'll see the gradual transition to the greener, more lush environment on the Fiordland side.

Mavora Lakes and Arriving in Te Anau

The tour visits South Mavora Lake, where you can stand on the river bridge and take in the views. This location marks the transition into native beech forest environments. As the journey continues toward Te Anau, the landscape becomes increasingly green and lush, with deer farming areas showing another aspect of New Zealand agriculture.

Before reaching Te Anau, the tour may stop at the Sprig and Thistle, a local family-run cafe and wool goods store. You'll arrive in Te Anau at approximately 5:00 PM and check into the Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas. Your guide will provide an eating-out brochure with recommendations for dinner in Te Anau.

Day Two: Milford Sound Tour from Te Anau

Morning Departure and Cruise

After a buffet breakfast at the hotel, you'll be collected at 7:30 AM for your Milford Sound Premium plus day tour. You’ll head along the Milford, stopping at one or two locations on the way, including a bathroom stop at Knobs Flat, before heading to Milford Sound.

You'll arrive at Milford Sound in time for a 10:30 AM cruise aboard the Milford Haven. This earlier cruise time provides a quiet and peaceful cruise experience, with fewer people on the morning cruise. The fiord often also has calmer water conditions at this time of day.

The two-hour cruise takes you the full length of the fiord to the Tasman Sea, with views of waterfalls, wildlife, and the iconic Mitre Peak.

Lunch at Milford Sound Lodge

After the cruise, you'll head to Milford Sound Lodge for a sit-down lunch at the Pio Pio restaurant from approximately 12:30 to 2:00 PM. The meal includes an entrée, main, and a drink, with a menu featuring locally sourced ingredients.

This is a chance to spend more time in Milford Sound, rather than heading straight back after the cruise. The lodge is set in native rainforest surrounded by mountains, providing a relaxed setting to enjoy a delicious meal and take in the scenery.

The Milford Road

After lunch, the return journey to Te Anau includes the Milford Road scenic stops. By this time of day, most day-trippers are arriving at Milford Sound, so the road back is quieter for driving on the way back.

The tour includes afternoon tea with coffee, tea, and a cafe muffin, up to 7 scenic stops, and a nature walk. Key stops include Mirror Lakes, Eglinton Valley, and Monkey Creek. Your guide will select the best options based on weather conditions and group interests.

You'll return to Te Anau by approximately 4:30 PM, giving you free time to explore the town or enjoy additional activities. Options include the Te Anau glowworm caves, Wings and Water float plane, the Fiordland Cinema, or exploring the lakefront. Luxe can help arrange bookings for any additional Te Anau activities.

Day Three: Return to Queenstown via Backcountry

Final Day Journey

After your second buffet breakfast at the hotel, you'll check out and depart Te Anau at 10:00 AM for the return journey to Queenstown.

Rather than retracing the exact route from day one, the return journey includes different stopping points along the backcountry road, providing fresh perspectives of the landscape and new photo opportunities.

Farewell at Walter Peak

You'll arrive back at Walter Peak Station around 12:45 PM, where you'll enjoy a farewell snack platter and have time to explore the homestead before the Earnslaw arrives.

The TSS Earnslaw departs Walter Peak at 1:45 PM, with arrival back in Queenstown at approximately 2:30 PM. This early-afternoon finish allows time for checking into accommodation, connecting with afternoon flights, or continuing your onward travel.

The Tour Vehicle

The custom Mercedes Sprinter van features all-wheel drive capability, designed specifically for the backcountry roads. While other operators usually seat up to 17 passengers in this van model, Luxe has removed a full row of seating to bring the total down to just 10 guests.

This modification creates nearly double the legroom found on standard tours, with extra-wide leather seats with extra padding, USB charging ports, cup holders, and climate-controlled air conditioning. There is also room in the van for each guest to bring one large suitcase and one carry-on bag.

Tour Inclusions

All breakfasts and lunches are included in the tour package. You are responsible for your own dinner on the two nights in Te Anau, and your guide will provide an eating-out brochure with local recommendations to help you choose.

The package covers:

  • Two nights at the Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas with buffet breakfasts

  • Barbecue lunch at Walter Peak on day one

  • Restaurant lunch at Milford Sound Lodge on day two

  • Farewell snack platter on day three

  • Chilled water on all 3 tour days

There is an option to book the tour without accommodation if you prefer to arrange your own in Te Anau. Luxe Tours will pick you up and drop you off for each part of the tour.

The three-day Walter Peak tour is Luxe Tours' most comprehensive experience, designed for visitors who want to tour to Milford Sound from Queenstown but prefer to do it at a relaxed pace rather than in a single day.

By spreading the journey over three days, you get time to experience the diverse landscapes between Queenstown and Te Anau, enjoy a quieter morning cruise at Milford Sound, and explore Te Anau in the evenings.

With exclusive access to rugged backcountry routes and plenty of time to take everything in, this tour offers a unique way to experience the Queenstown to Milford Sound journey, including parts of the region that most visitors never see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour suitable for children?

Children are welcome, and guides enjoy having them on tours. However, please consider that day one involves approximately two hours of travel and day two involves four hours. Luxe does not provide car seats, but you are welcome to bring your own, and guides will assist with installation.

If your children are comfortable with these travel times, they will likely enjoy the diverse experiences the tour offers.

Why is the tour three days?

The three-day format was designed to create an unhurried experience. There are Queenstown to Milford Sound one-day tour options available, but spreading the journey over three days allows you to experience the landscapes at a laid-back pace. It also means a quieter morning cruise at Milford Sound and two full evenings to enjoy Te Anau.

Where are the bathrooms on the tour?

On day one, there are bathrooms at Walter Peak and two facilities along the Von Valley route, approximately every 45 minutes. On day two, bathroom stops include facilities at Knobs Flat (about 45 minutes into the drive) and at the Milford Sound cruise terminal and the Milford Sound Lodge.

What food and drinks are included on the Milford Sound tour?

Day one includes the buffet barbecue lunch at Walter Peak and a chilled water bottle.

Day two includes buffet breakfast at the hotel, restaurant lunch at Milford Sound Lodge (entrée, main, and drink), and afternoon tea with muffin and tea/coffee.

Day three includes buffet breakfast and the farewell snack platter at Walter Peak. You are responsible for your own dinners in Te Anau.

Will there be wifi on the Milford Sound tour?

On day one, you'll have cellphone reception and wifi until approximately 2:00 PM. Once the tour enters the Von Valley, reception is lost until approximately 4:30 PM. You'll have wifi at the hotel in Te Anau. On day two to Milford Sound, reception is patchy along the Milford Road.

Can I bring more than one suitcase?

Additional luggage can usually be accommodated if you let the booking team know ahead of time.
