Beat The Crowds to Milford Sound with This Tour

Milford Sound is one of New Zealand's most popular destinations, and during the warmer months from October through to the end of March, visitor numbers rise significantly.
If you'd like to experience Milford Sound during this period but with a quieter feel to your day, we run a special tour option designed to do just that. Here's what you need to know to help you decide if it's the right tour for you.
Key Takeaways
The Beat The Crowds Premium Milford Sound Tour is an earlier departure option from Te Anau, available on selected days during the warmer months of October to end of March.
Departing at 7:30 am puts you on a quieter 10:30 am cruise, and lets you enjoy the Milford Road scenic stops on the way back when they're less busy.
The tour returns to Te Anau by 4:30 pm, making it a good option for making the most of long summer evenings or fitting in with kids' dinner and bedtime routines.
The tour includes a Milford Haven cruise capped at 40% of its capacity, up to 10 photo stops and experiences, and an optional short nature walk.
The tour runs on selected days only. If your preferred date isn't showing, get in touch, and we may be able to open the tour or find an alternative.
How the Tour Works

This tour beats the crowds with its earlier departure time. We depart Te Anau at 7:30 am, an hour earlier than our regular Premium Milford Sound Tour from Te Anau. The earlier time helps us get ahead of some of the day's busiest periods.
The Milford Road is quieter in the early morning, before the main flow of tours from Queenstown arrives, so we head to Milford Sound with very little traffic on the road.
We then get to Milford Sound in time for a 10:30 am cruise on the Milford Haven, which is quieter than the midday cruises when visitor numbers are higher.
We leave Milford Sound at 12:30 pm, just as most visitors are arriving for the midday cruises. This means we can visit the Milford Road scenic stops on the way back when most other visitors have already passed through.
Along the way, we'll stop for afternoon tea at a scenic spot, with an optional nature walk to Marian Falls, the Chasm, or Lake Gunn, depending on the day and conditions. We arrive back in Te Anau at around 4:30 pm.
Who This Tour Suits
The Beat The Crowds Tour suits anyone who would prefer to visit Milford Sound outside the busiest part of the day.
If you want to make the most of the long summer daylight hours, arriving back in Te Anau by 4:30 pm also leaves plenty of time for an evening activity, a leisurely dinner, or a stroll along the lake before sunset.
The earlier start can also work well for families with younger children. Kids are often up early anyway, and the earlier finish means you're back with plenty of time to sort dinner and bedtime routines.

Our Other Milford Sound Tours
The Beat The Crowds Tour is one way to experience Milford Sound outside the busiest periods, but our other Premium Milford Sound tours also take crowd levels into account.
On both our Te Anau and Queenstown tours, our guides use their local knowledge to avoid the busiest spots where possible. This can include visiting quieter alternative photo stops that larger tour buses don't visit, changing the order of stops depending on the day's conditions, and allowing extra time at popular locations so you're not rushed through them.
The Milford Sound Tour from Te Anau also has a shorter travel day than the Queenstown tour, so there is more flexibility to adapt the itinerary as the day unfolds.
The Queenstown tour has a longer journey, but as a small-group tour, the guide can still adjust the day, where possible, to avoid the busiest places.
Whichever tour you choose, the aim is to give you time to enjoy Milford Sound without feeling like you're crowded or being rushed from one stop to the next.

The Beat The Crowds Milford Sound Tour is designed for visitors who'd like to experience Milford Sound during the warmer months while avoiding some of the busiest parts of the day. If having a little more space and a little less bustle sounds like your kind of day, this could be the tour for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a small group or large group Milford Sound tour better?
It depends on what you're looking for. Small-group tours generally offer a more personal experience, with fewer people in the vehicle and more flexibility to adjust the day, while larger group tours can be a good option if price is a bigger consideration. Small-group tours can also make it easier for guides to visit quieter stops and adapt the itinerary around busy periods.
When should I book a Milford Sound tour?
If you're visiting Milford Sound during the busy summer months, it's best to book your tour several months in advance, particularly if you have a specific date or tour operator in mind. During the quieter months, you can usually book closer to your travel date.
For comprehensive information on when to book and how far in advance to plan, see our guide on when to book Milford Sound.
Is Milford Sound Busy in Summer?
Yes, summer is the busiest time of year to visit Milford Sound, particularly from December through to February. Visitor numbers are highest around the middle of the day, when tours and self-drivers arrive for the midday cruise departures.
If you're visiting in summer, choosing an earlier tour can help you avoid some of the busiest periods and enjoy a quieter experience along the Milford Road and at Milford Sound.
