As locals who have spent years showing visitors around this region, we’ve seen how different every trip can look depending on how much time people have and what they want to get out of it.

Some visitors have just a couple of days to see the highlights. Others have the luxury of time and want to explore deeper into the national park.

Here, we’ve put together three Fiordland itineraries that work well for different timeframes and travel styles, to help you plan a trip that suits you.

Key Takeaways

  • The two-night itinerary covers Milford Sound and the glowworm caves, making it ideal for visitors on a shorter schedule

  • The four-night itinerary allows time for Milford Sound, a backcountry day hike, and Doubtful Sound

  • The all-inclusive three-day itinerary provides a premium experience with transport, meals, and logistics handled

  • All three itineraries are based in Te Anau, the gateway town to Fiordland National Park

  • Te Anau also provides a range of optional trip add-ons, such as the Fiordland Cinema, Redcliff Restaurant, and Wildwood Sauna

The Essentials: A Two-Night Fiordland Itinerary

This itinerary suits travellers who have limited time to explore the area, but still want to experience Fiordland's two most iconic attractions. It's perfect if you're passing through on a South Island road trip or have just a few days to spare.

Day 1: Arrive in Te Anau

Te Anau, Luxe Tours

Check into your Te Anau accommodation between 3-4pm, which is the standard check-in time for most accommodations. Take the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore the lakefront, grab dinner in town, and prepare for your Milford Sound adventure the following day.

Te Anau has various dining options, ranging from casual cafes to fine dining restaurants. An evening stroll along the lakefront provides beautiful views across to the Murchison Mountains.

Day 2: Milford Sound

What is so special about Milford Sound, article, Luxe Tours

This is your big day exploring Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. You can either self-drive the 120km Milford Road or join a guided tour that handles all the logistics. All tours include a Milford Sound cruise as part of the experience.

After returning to Te Anau in the late afternoon, you'll settle back into your accommodation for a second night. This gives you time to rest after a full day and prepare for your morning check-out and departure the following day.

Day 3: Glowworm Caves and Departure

On your final morning, check out of your accommodation and head to the RealNZ Visitor Centre, at 85 Lakefront Drive, for your glowworm caves tour. The glowworm cave tours run multiple times throughout the day, with morning departures between 9am and 11:30am.

The 2.5-hour experience begins with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau to the western shores. From there, you'll walk through ancient forest to reach the cave entrance at Cavern House.

Inside, knowledgeable guides lead you through limestone passages carved by underground waterfalls.

The highlight comes when you board a small boat and drift silently through complete darkness beneath thousands of glowworms. These bioluminescent creatures create a magical ceiling of lights that looks like a starry night sky.

After the cave tour, you'll cruise back across the lake and continue your onward journey.

Optional Add-Ons

Fiordland Cinema on Night One

Fiordland Cinema, Te Anau

Consider spending your first evening at the Fiordland Cinema watching Ata Whenua, a 32-minute documentary showcasing stunning aerial footage of Fiordland National Park. It's an excellent way to preview the landscapes you'll see from ground level the next day.

The film features sweeping shots over mountains, fiords, waterfalls, and native forest. Watching it before your Milford Sound trip helps you appreciate the scale and beauty of the area you're about to explore.

Redcliff Restaurant After Milford Sound

After a full day at Milford Sound, treat yourself to dinner at Redcliff Restaurant. Located in a charming cottage setting, Redcliff serves seasonal New Zealand cuisine in a cosy, rustic atmosphere.

The restaurant is popular, especially in summer, so book a couple of nights ahead.

The Nature Lover's Itinerary: Four Nights in Fiordland

If your budget allows and you want to immerse yourself in Fiordland's wilderness, this extended itinerary delivers the ultimate nature experience.

Day 1: Arrive in Te Anau

Check into your accommodation in the afternoon and settle into Te Anau. Use the evening to walk the lakefront, enjoy dinner, and prepare your daypack for tomorrow's Milford Sound adventure.

Day 2: Milford Sound

Dedicate this full day to exploring Milford Sound, either on a self-drive trip or guided tour, soaking in all the scenery and wildlife at key locations, like Mirror Lakes and Eglinton Valley

A Milford Sound cruise typically runs for two hours, giving you plenty of time to appreciate the waterfalls, mountains, and marine wildlife like seals and dolphins. Return to Te Anau for the evening and rest up for the following day.

Day 3: Day Hike

You have many options for a day of hiking through Fiordland's wilderness. Here is a selection of our favourites, suitable for a range of comfort and fitness levels.

Lake Marian

The Lake Marian track follows a creek through mossy beech forest to Marian Falls waterfall, before climbing steeply to a crystal-clear alpine lake in a glacial hanging valley.

The track begins in Hollyford Valley, around a 1.5 hr drive down Milford Road from Te Anau.

The track can be muddy and challenging, especially after rain, but the scenery is spectacular. The track is suitable for those with high fitness levels. Allow 3-4 hours return for this walk.

Key Summit

Key Summit offers panoramic views over the Humboldt and Darran Mountains, with the track passing through native beech forest, shrublands,  and alpine tarns. T

he walk is about 3 hours return from the Divide car park on the Milford Road, around a 1-hour drive from Te Anau. The track is suitable for moderate fitness levels.

Kepler Track Options

The Kepler Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, offers flexible day hike options right from Te Anau. You can choose between a challenging mountain climb or an easy lakeside stroll, depending on your fitness and time available.

If you’re up for a challenge, catch the Kepler Water Taxi from Te Anau to access the track. This full-day hike tackles the climb from 200m to 1400m elevation, rewarding you with views of Fiordland and Lake Te Anau. You can choose to reach the bush line, Luxmore Hut, or push all the way to the summit itself.

If you prefer something easier, the Round the Bay walk offers a gentle half-day option. Take the water taxi to Brod Bay, then walk back to Te Anau via the cycle trail and Te Anau Bird Sanctuary, about 2.5 hours covering 10km of flat, easy terrain. This route is great for families.

Kepler Track Summit

Milford Track Day Walk

Experience a section of the world-famous Milford Track without committing to the full multi-day hike. Access the track by driving to Milford Sound and then taking a water taxi from Deepwater Basin to Sandfly Point.

From Sandfly Point, walk to Giant Gate Falls, a stunning waterfall reached via flat, easy track in under two hours. The return walk takes about 3-4 hours total and suits families with children. The track winds through ancient beech forest and offers a taste of what makes the Milford Track so famous.

Day 4: Doubtful Sound

Today’s journey takes you through another incredible fiord landscape beginning at Lake Manapouri, where you'll cruise across the lake before boarding a coach that travels over Wilmot Pass. This winding mountain road descends to the shores of Doubtful Sound, where you'll board a boat for a 2.5-hour cruise of the fiord.

Doubtful Sound is quieter than Milford Sound because there's no direct road access, so the experience feels very remote. Wildlife includes bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, and the rare Fiordland Crested penguin.

Day 5: Departure

Check out of your accommodation and head to your next destination. If time allows before leaving, grab breakfast at one of Te Anau's cafes and take a final walk along the lakefront to soak in the mountain views.

Optional Add-Ons

Fiordland Cinema

Watch the Ata Whenua documentary on your first evening to get oriented to the landscapes you'll explore over the coming days.

Glowworm Caves

Add the glowworm cave experience on any evening when you're not too tired from hiking. The evening departures at 5:45pm, 7pm, or 8:15pm work well after a day hike.

Fiordland Jet

For an adrenaline rush, book a jet boat ride along the Waiau River. These high-speed boats perform thrilling 360-degree spins while showcasing the river's scenery and birdlife. See bookings here.

Wings & Water Floatplane

Take a scenic flight over Fiordland's lakes, mountains, and fiords for a bird's-eye perspective on the wilderness you've been exploring from the ground. See bookings here.

Wildwood Sauna

Wildwood Sauna, Te Anau, Luxe Tours.

Choose from social sessions, women's sessions, or private bookings for a 60-minute wood-fired sauna experience. Each session includes three 15-minute rounds with gentle steam rituals with lake views, and you're free to step outside for lake-side cooling between rounds.

Tour Value

3-Day Milford Sound Tour Itinerary Article, Luxe Tours

When you calculate the individual costs of this tour, the accommodation for two nights, two hotel breakfasts, the TSS Earnslaw cruises both ways, the Milford Sound cruise, snacks, and transport, the tour price works out the same or slightly cheaper than booking everything separately.

The backcountry route via Walter Peak also isn't accessible to rental cars, so independent travellers with rentals can't replicate this exact experience. Everything in this tour is organised for you in a premium, small-group setting with expert local guides who know the region intimately.

For travellers desiring convenience alongside unique, authentic back country New Zealand experiences, this tour fits the bill.

Fiordland isn’t a place to rush, and the best itinerary is simply the one that gives you time to enjoy it in your own way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days should I spend in Fiordland?

Most visitors find that two to four days is a good amount of time to experience Milford Sound and explore Te Anau. If you enjoy plenty of hiking and wildlife, then allowing three to five days gives you a more relaxed pace and time to explore beyond the main highlights.

Do I need to book activities in advance in Fiordland and Milford Sound?

During peak season (December to February), it’s strongly recommended to book key activities like Milford Sound cruises, glowworm caves, and guided tours at least 4 weeks out. Outside peak season, availability is sometimes better, but booking ahead is still recommended, as there are reduced departure times for many cruises and tours in colder months.

Is Fiordland suitable if you don’t want to do long hikes?

Yes. While Fiordland is known for its hiking tracks, there are many shorter walks, cruises, scenic stops, and guided experiences that let you enjoy the landscapes without strenuous hiking. Some easy, shorter walk options include the Lake Gunn nature walk and the walk to Marian Falls.
